More Than a Sign: Helping Travelers Find Downtown Superior.

There’s something exciting about seeing a new highway sign go up especially when you know how long it took to get there.
New signage along US 60 is now directing travelers toward Downtown Superior, marking the culmination of nearly a decade of persistence, advocacy and coordination with the Arizona Department of Transportation.
It may seem like a simple change. But for a small business community, helping people find their way downtown can make a meaningful difference.

Turning Highway Traffic Into Downtown Visitors
Thousands of people travel along US 60 through Superior, whether they are headed to visit Boyce Thompson Arboretum, exploring the Copper Corridor or simply passing through.
But passing through and stopping are two very different things.
A traveler may be only a few blocks away from a locally owned restaurant, shop, gallery or other downtown business and never know it is there. Clear signage helps make that connection.
The new signs provide an important visual cue: Downtown Superior is here, and it is worth exploring!

Visibility Matters for Small Business
For independent businesses, visibility is one of the ongoing challenges of doing business in a small town.
Unlike businesses located directly along a major commercial corridor, many of Superior’s downtown businesses depend on visitors intentionally turning off the highway and spending time exploring the community.
That means wayfinding is more than a convenience. It becomes part of the infrastructure that supports a healthy business district.
When more travelers know how to reach downtown, there are more opportunities for them to stop for lunch, browse a shop, visit a gallery, attend an event or discover a business they may want to return to later.

Supporting a Downtown Ecosystem
One of the strengths of a downtown business district is that businesses benefit from one another.
A visitor may come downtown for one reason and discover three more while they are here. Someone stopping for coffee may notice a shop next door. A visitor attending an event may stay for dinner. Someone exploring historic Superior may discover a business they had never heard of before.
That interconnectedness is part of what makes a thriving downtown possible.
The new US 60 signage doesn’t promote one individual business. It helps make the entire downtown district more visible, creating opportunities for everyone.

A Long-Term Investment in Superior
The signs are also a reminder that meaningful community improvements often take persistence.
After years of working through regulations, navigating challenges and continuing to advocate for better downtown signage, the project is finally complete.
It represents another step toward making Superior easier to navigate, more welcoming to visitors and more supportive of the entrepreneurs and small businesses investing in our community.
At the Superior Enterprise Center, we know that building a strong local economy happens in many ways. It happens when someone decides to start a business. It happens when an existing business finds the resources it needs to grow. And it happens when a community makes investments that help connect customers with the people doing business here.
Sometimes, that investment looks like a new program or resource.
And sometimes, it looks like a sign pointing the way downtown.
Next time you’re traveling US 60, follow the signs and spend a little time in Downtown Superior. You never know what you might discover.
