Breathing New Life into History: How Superior High School’s Reinvention Celebrates Community

In 2021, the Copper Corridor — including our hometown of Superior — received a boost from a $600,000 grant awarded to the Copper Corridor Blight Busters (CCBB). The goal? To assess and rehabilitate long-neglected or under-used buildings, ground zero for turning “blight” into community assets.

One of the first and most meaningful projects under this program is the transformation of the historic Superior High School. Once a schoolhouse serving generations, the 1925-built building is being re-imagined as a multigenerational community hub — including housing the Superior Enterprise Center itself.

Why Historic Reuse Matters

  • Preserves community memory and identity. Re-using a building like the Superior High School allows us to honor the past while giving the building new purpose.

  • Saves resources & supports sustainability. Instead of tearing down and building anew (with all the environmental and financial costs), re-use leverages existing infrastructure, saving energy and waste.

  • Creates community resilience and connection. With a new mix of uses — from job training and small-business support (via Enterprise Center programs), to a public library, senior center, arts and wellness spaces — the building becomes a gathering place that serves all ages and needs.

What’s Next for Superior High / Enterprise Center

Since its purchase by the Town of Superior in January 2020, the High School has begun its transformation — respecting its original architecture while thoughtfully modifying it for accessibility and modern community use.

Inside, you’ll find programs to support workforce development, small-business growth, community gatherings, and more. Outside, we’re creating a foundation for long-term community strength, cultural connection, and pride. As the Mayor said, “Repurposing materials and places is how we honor and preserve our history, continue to tell our story, and embrace the future.”

Why This Matters for All of Us

Historic buildings aren’t relics to ignore — they’re living stories of our shared heritage. When we revive them, we revive community, identity, and opportunity. The Superior High School transformation isn’t just construction: it’s a statement of hope, continuity, and renewal for Superior and the Copper Corridor.
