Superior, Arizona, a historic mining town, is undergoing a transformation, thanks to the nonprofit Rebuild Superior Inc. This local organization, led by Manny Guzman, a native of Superior, is working to breathe new life into the community by addressing blighted properties and creating opportunities for growth.

With a $250,000 EPA grant, Rebuild Superior launched a “clean and lien” program to clean up abandoned properties. These efforts go beyond aesthetics, as they address public safety concerns and create new opportunities for affordable housing, tourism, and economic development. This initiative aligns with Superior’s broader vision of attracting visitors through its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and rich cultural heritage, while reducing dependence on mining.

The project also exemplifies the power of partnerships. Rebuild Superior collaborates closely with the town to select properties for rehabilitation or demolition, with the goal of reinvesting any proceeds back into the community. Additionally, a $1 million grant is extending this model across Arizona’s Copper Corridor, helping other rural communities clean up hazardous properties and stimulate local economies.
